Makers’ Yard

Sustainable Making.

Bringing unused industrial space
back into community use.

Create, make, up-cycle & learn new skills.

The Makers’ Yard, funded by Travis Perkins and the local community in August 2021, will be opening after a period of refurbishment in summer 2022. The project, a community social enterprise next to Hive studios in Upper Edmonton, is designed to provide a maker-space for Enfield’s creatives to to produce artwork without having to travel away from their primary studio to do so.

Our project raised over £25,000 from a 8-week campaign of community engagement and support. The funds enabled us to transform an industrial outdoor yard into a space to create, make, up-cycle and learn new skills. There is now a professional-quality workshop with equipment accessible for a whole range of mediums including woodworking, metalworking and spray painting.

While it is a great place for professional artists to work, another aspect of the project was to develop a Makers’ Yard for the community. We want to offer a space where the local community can learn a new skill under the guidance of Huren Marsh, an artist and designer with over thirty years teaching experience. Starting in the summer of 2022 regular free drop-in workshops, called ‘Make, Repair and Restore’ will be offered from the Makers’ Yard, where local people will be encouraged to learn new skills.

Alongside the workshops Hive also hopes to host monthly discussions with local creatives and lecturers with a different focus each month.
